Yin and Yang Aromatherapy – Using Lavender and Peppermint Essential Oils at Home

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for physical and emotional well being. They are comprised of naturally occurring chemicals that work in synergy with one another. Unlike prescription drugs, the healing properties of essential oils date back thousands of years.

Two of the most versatile essential oils are lavender and peppermint. Think of these two oils as yin and yang. Lavender is warm and relaxing, while peppermint is cool and invigorating.

Each morning, add eight to ten drops of peppermint essential oil to a fragrance burner filled with water to help wake you up. Peppermint is also helpful for fighting the afternoon blahs and has a natural cooling effect. Put a drop or two on a cotton ball, close your eyes and inhale deeply. If you are prone to headaches, mix one-eighth cup carrier oil, such as sweet almond or extra virgin olive oil to 12 drops peppermint and massage your temples, neck, and forehead.

In the evening, add nine drops of lavender to your bathwater, dim the lights and take several deep breaths to help you relax. Try a few drops directly on your pillowcase or on a cotton ball if you have a difficult time getting to sleep. Lavender can help balance your emotions, relieve stress and aid in lowering blood pressure. It is beneficial for the skin and can be used for blemishes, scrapes, sunburn, and rashes. Add a drop or two to a wet cotton ball and apply to the affected area.

One of the simplest ways to use lavender or peppermint is to make your own body lotion. Purchase a high quality, unscented lotion and add thirty to forty drops of either oil or a combination of the two oils.

Essential oils are naturally antibacterial and antiviral and are effective for treating colds and flu. Fill a bowl with water, heat carefully, then add a few drops of lavender and peppermint. Put a towel over your head, close your eyes and inhale. When the water cools, take a washcloth and use as a compress to cover your forehead. This helps relieve headaches and sinus pressure.

Replace your room fresheners and their inherent chemicals and ozone depleting propellants. Add several drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil to a spray bottle filled with distilled water and gently shake before misting your room. Use lavender as a linen mist and peppermint on your counters and floorboards to deter household pests.

Hildegard of Bingen’s Healing with Herbs and Essential Oils

Europeans did not get into the production of essential oils until the 12th century. Many healers, particularly the monks and nuns in the abbeys and monasteries cultivated their own aromatic plants. They also used many spices, herbs and aromatic oils from the Far East in their healing ministrations. We need to remember that all literary knowledge as well as herbal knowledge rested in the monasteries since it was the monks and nuns who copied the ancient texts. We also know that it was the men and women in these religious orders who practiced various forms of healing. Lavender in particular, was studied for its medicinal properties along with rosemary, sage, basil, chamomile, melissa and thyme. These plants seemed to do well in the colder Germanic countryside. Some of these abbeys had vast underground storerooms where they kept their herbs and the oils along with the foodstuff, wines and beer. They dispensed medication to the ill in the form of herbal teas, herbal infused oils, medicated beers, medicated wines, brandies, and herbal tinctures and salves.

While in Europe a few years ago, I visited the ruins of many of these abbeys and found that they generally placed their herb gardens right outside the windows of the infirmary. During warm days, they would carry the sick out into the garden or open the great shuttered windows so that the breezes would carry the fragrances of the plants to the sick. It was believed that these heavenly scents would help cure the sick.

Hildegard of Bingen–A Healer for Our Day Hildegard was a Benedictine abbess in the 12th century. She wrote extensively on the use of herbal remedies, tinctures, salves, ointments and oils as part of her medicine. Her writings were used as a point of reference for abbeys throughout Europe during that time and for many centuries following. Hildegard’s work with herbs, crystals, gemstones and essential oils is now being studied extensively all over Europe and is being used in American classes on aromatherapy. Essential Oils and War Veterans – The Psychological and Emotional Benefits of Using Essential Oils

Most of our soldiers have experienced physical or emotional traumas. Some have returned to a seemingly normal civilian life and others remain in special veterans hospitals with an uncertain future.

Even if they appear to be okay, the war has scarred them and made them into a different person than they were before they left. What I would like to share with you is how therapeutic grade essential oils can assist our veterans in overcoming these psychological and emotional traumas. This is a three-step process.

Past Traumas and Memories

Aromatherapy Carrier Oils for Topical Use

Unlike essential oils that come from flowers, roots and leaves, carrier oils are extracted from nuts and fruits and are generally much cheaper than their essential counterparts. They are, however, vital in order to create skincare aromatherapy products as they both dilute and anchor the more volatile essential oils that should never be applied undiluted to the skin as they could cause irritation or allergic reactions.

Being familiar with both the scent and texture of the different carrier oils can make all the difference between being a good aromatherapy professional or being the one people keep coming back to buy aromatherapy blends from. You are probably already familiar with the names of many carrier oils, as they are used as base on many moisturisers and skin care products. Some popular oils that are also frequently used on cosmetic products are sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, jojoba or even olive oil.

If you are considering making your own aromatherapy products, the choice of carrier oil will greatly influence the results. For example, lavender oil is astringent and works well to help with skin problems such as acne, so combining it with other essential oils that have complementary qualities can greatly enhance its effects.
